The Netflix envelope that arrived  yesterday carried more than a plastic DVD, it carried a renewed sense of hope and a spark that reignited my passion.  I can’t say I learned anything from Food Inc. because it is sort of a Reader’s Digest version of the best books on food production the last 5 years. That said, this is a MUST-SEE MOVIE that stands to put ample information in the hands of everyday people.  It puts responsibility squarely where it belongs, in our own hands.

EVERY penny that we spend on anything edible is a vote, the only real voice we have left. We don’t have to quit our jobs and join the few, poorly funded, tenacious bulldogs that advocate for change in food standards at the national level. No need to feel stomped down by “the Man” that runs the corporate food machines which have all but replaced the farmers of the world.  Feelings of being taken, deceived, and even poisoned will not solve the problem.  What will solve the problem is our choices on what food we are willing to pay for. Each one of us have a bank account full of sweet nothings that “the Man” undoubtedly hopes we will whisper into their corporate coffers.  If you really want to be heard, if you really want to make a change, limit your spending on food to produce and products that are in alignment with your health, the health of your environment, and with your beliefs about how the humans who grow, process and transport what you eat deserve to be treated.

Yes!  It does cost more to eat organic, locally grown food and consciously raised meat, poultry and dairy.  But before you trade your conscience for a 99 cent burger look at what you get for spending more on yourself…

When you spend money on organic, locally grown real food made by real people you also get…

to save the planet by…

* reducing the use of chemical fertilizers which rape the land
* lessen the amount of toxic pesticide used which also
* lessens the amount of life-killing run off that pollutes waterways which also
* kills aquatic life and throws off the entire balance in our ecosystem

But wait there’s more, you also get…

* to lessen the distance the food needs to travel to get to your plate which
* lessens carbon emissions and
* reduces our nations dependency on oil which also
* removes our need to meddle in the affairs of oil rich (for now) countries which
* saves the lives of the people who so bravely commit themselves
